Roosevelts New Deal - 1480 Words
At the beginning of the 1930s, the American dollar depreciated rapidly, 17% of the workforce became unemployed, and Americans were losing hope in Capitalist ideas. During the 1932 election, Franklin Delano Roosevelt ran for office with the ââ¬Å"New Dealâ⬠as his main focus. Soon after becoming elected and entering office on March 4th, 1933, he started implementing many new programs he felt would return the economyââ¬â¢s level to pre-1929. Many problems created by the stock market crash of 1929 were alleviated by the end of FDRââ¬â¢s third term, but the New Deal might not have been a total success. Many of the programs that were generated during the early days of the depression failed to perform as they were intended to, whereas others simply didâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The secondary focus of the AAA was to stop foreclosures inevitable within the next few years. The governmentââ¬â¢s land banks would issue loans to stop current foreclosures and refinance all other mortgages, while keeping the interest rate at 4.5%. With these two steps taken towards assisting the farmers, the agriculture of America was able to continue for the next few years unimpeded. However, this was only a temporary solution to a problem that would plague America for the next few years. Harry Hopkins, a huge supporter for a welfare system which would allow every American to have a certain level of economic security, was placed in charge of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration on May 19th. The program was allotted $500 million dollars, for grants and loans, which Mr. Hopkins had to disperse among the states accordingly. This program combined with the Public Works Act significantly raised the lifestyles of the lower class and union members. The PWA sought to create multiple jobs by using government money to fund state building projects. This program can be seen even today in the form of public work offices located throughout many states in America. Many of the other programs in the New Deal were more focused on pro labor as compared with the previous administrationââ¬â¢s ideas of lââ¬â¢aissez faire. Lââ¬â¢aissez faire is a practice where the government does not interfere with the daily operations of big business. A one-hour long film produced by Media Education Foundation and directed by Sut Jhally, Tough Guise is a documentary released in 1999. The film features Jackson Katz - an anti-violence educator, filmmaker and author ââ¬â who, as the title of the film itself implies, speaks about representations of violence and hypermasculinity prevalent in our social media, and how this affects our society as a whole. The film starts with the narrator, Jackson Katz, underlining the extreme notion of masculinity that is presented in our everyday lives. Contrary to popular beliefs, masculinity is a projection that is put up by men and not a fixed state of being. The ââ¬Ëtough guiseââ¬â¢, defined by Katz as ââ¬Å"the front that so many men put up that s based on the extreme notions of masculinity that emphasizes toughness and physical strength and gaining the respect and admiration of others through violence or the implicit threat of itâ⬠, becomes the main issue that affects people who identify as male. When Katz brought up the meaning of a man, the film intercuts to scenes of interviewed teenagers who used words like ââ¬Ëtoughââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëindependentââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëmuscularââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëstrongââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëpowerfulââ¬â¢ to describe their ideas of a man. Corporate Social Responsibility And Access - Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss about Corporate Social Responsibility And Access. Answer: Corporate Social Responsibility states that every business has a responsibility towards the society whether it is environmental, social or even towards its stakeholders including employees, suppliers, shareholders and community at large (Suliman, Al-Khatib, Thomas, 2016). Corporate social responsibility states that every business has responsibility to contribute towards the social well being of the society at large. Nowadays most of the company are compulsorily required to follow and fulfil their social responsibility towards the society in which it operates (Cheng, Ioannou, Serafeim, 2014). The company which is selected for this assignment is Altech Chemical Ltd which has its headquarters in Australia and it is also listed in the Australian stock exchange (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). The corporate responsibilities of a business organisation are given in points below: The main responsibility of any business organisation is to contribute to the needs of the society which may be generation of employment and income generation for the society as well as development of the business. Some of the business takes responsibility of environmental issues of the society such as planting of more trees, management and use of society resources in an effective manner. Most of the chemical and oil companies are responsible for waste management. In other words such types of companies are responsible to dispose off the waste created by them in a safe manner. Most of the time such wastes are hazardous in nature and therefore these waste must be dealt with in a safe manner. A business can engage in charitable work in order to show the society that the company is following its corporate responsibility toward the society. The charitable work of the business can be donations to public organisations, schools and charitable institutions. Altech Chemical ltd has to follow its corporate social responsibility as every business in Australia has to strictly follow corporate social responsibility. The corporate social responsibility of Altech Chemical ltd is the management of waste which the company generates in production of alumina (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). The hazardous and bio degradeable are dumped in a pit where there is no chance of leakage to the ground water or else it will lead to ground water population. The company is also engaged in exploration activities which naturally disrupt an area and its surroundings. However the company has license for exploration activity from the government of Australia. The responsibility of the Altech Chemical ltd is to ensure that the company develops the area where the company had conducted exploration activities (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). The company will be recovering the area and planting trees and levelling the ground soil. Most of the companies in Australia need to follow corporate social responsibilities as it is mandatory in most of the countries. It is the responsibility of the business to ensure that they are contributing to the needs of the society. (Bu?i?nien?, Kazlauskait?, 2012). Basically the society gives the power to such business to operate and in return the society expects that the needs of the society are given priority. However most of the businesses do not consider such responsibilities as important. They just incur such expenses in order to show the public that the company is incurring some expenses in Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR). Such companies consider this CSR expenses as unnecessary expenses (Brammer, Jackson, Matten, 2012). However some of the companies follow such policies properly. Altech Chemical Company has shown exploration and development expenses in the balance sheet at $571904 for the period ending on 30 June 2016. The figure of exploration and development ex pense consist of restoration costs which the company incurs on the sites of exploration by the company (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). As per Milton Friedman, the one and only responsibility of a business is to use the resources available to the organisation in order to increase the profits of the organisation while facing competition and without using any deception or fraudulent means. Most of the corporate businesses agree with this view that the primary concern of the business is to earn profits and maximise the wealth of its shareholders. However due to strict norms introduced by most of the countries corporate organisations nowadays have to follow corporate social responsibilities. Some of the businesses have incorporated CSR strategies in their policies to ensure that the corporate responsibilities of the business are taken care of and the accountability for the same is accepted by the business. CSR strategies not only demonstrate to the society that the business care for them but also follow sustainable development. In order to understand how CSR strategies can bring about sustainable development, the first t hing that is needed to be understood is the concept of sustainable development. Sustainable development can be described as the development which looks after the needs of present generations without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Holden, Linnerud, Banister, 2017). The concept of sustainable development is important as it is the only way to save the natural resources for the future generations. CSR strategies consist of activities like environmental restorations, charity works, development of schools and hospitals and waste management. Corporate houses have responsibilities to ensure that the corporate social responsibilities of the business are efficiently managed and implemented. If business follow their corporate social responsibilities in efficient manner there is a genuine chance that the society can stay on the path of sustainable development (Barkemeyer et al., 2014).For this purpose the company holds various exploration licences from the Australian government and the company is also responsible for the rehabilitation of the area which was under mining or exploration. The exploration and development costs as shown in the balance sheet of Altech Chemicals ltd signifies that the companys exploration expenses are capitalised as it is directly associated with the production activity of the business (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). The exploration and development cost as shown in the balance sheet of the company which includes restoration cost of the area where the exploration activity took place. Thus the company undertakes activities which are related to the restoration of the environment and safe dumping of the waste which is generated in the process of production of alumina. Looking after the environment from where such businesses draw natural resources is definitely steps which the business takes towards sustainable development. Profit maximisation refers to concept where the business is focused on earning as profit as it can for the business. The business primary focus is when the business strategy is profit maximisation is to earn as much profit as possible for the business (Cao et al., 2013). In such a case the company uses all kind of strategies which will allow the business to earn as much profit as possible. A business normally earns more profits in order to satisfy the owners or shareholders of the business. In other words a business earns profit out of which a part of the profit is distributed among the shareholders. As the business earns more profits the business can distribute more profits as dividends to its shareholders. With passing time business and the world realised that the business are not just responsible to the shareholders but all the stakeholders of the business (Seuring, Gold, 2013). Stakeholders are individuals who are directly or indirectly affected by the activities of the companie s and hence the companies should be accountable to them as well. The stakeholders include employees, credits, banks, investors and anyone who is affected by the activities of the business (Lawrence, Weber, 2014). Nowadays most of the companies recognises that the company is accountable to all the stakeholders. In recent times the profit maximisation concept has been replaced by wealth maximisation concept and profit solely is not considered as a factor of performance of the business (Wilson, Plumley, Ramchandani, 2013). The business considers other performance indicators such cash flows in the business, companys reputation in the market, stock prices of the company in the market (Cho, Lee, Pfeiffer, 2013). Positive cash flow shows that the company has well established liquidity structure and positive cash flows show that the business is developing. The companys reputation in the market is also considered to be an indicator of the performance of the company. If the company is perf orming well then the reputation of the company will be good. The company will then have loyalty in the shareholder market. Results also show that a company which is performing well are always awarded with high share prices. Altech Chemical Companys financial statement shows that the company is not performing well as the company has incurred a net loss of $ 1233076 (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). The companys cash flow statement shows that the company has negative cash flow from operating activities in 2016 (Altechchemicals.com, 2018). This shows that the company is having difficulty in the operations. Reference Altech Chemicals Limited - High Purity Alumina Producer. (2018).Altechchemicals.com. Mexican National Flag And Crest Essays - Vexillology,
Mexican National Flag And Crest The Mexican National Flag and Emblem The Mexican National Flag and its crest are symbols that represent the nation. Its origination can be traced back to the period of independence, when Mexico broke free from European foreign rule. The history of the crest or emblem of the flag is based on the representation of the founding of the land were Tenochtitlan was built. According to legend the Aztec God of War had given them a sign in which they were to build their Empire. The sign was an eagle perched on a cactus that would be tearing apart a serpent. After a long journey traveling from Aztlan, which is currently Nayarit, the Aztecs found what they had been searching for in the valley of Mexico, the eagle on the cactus on the shores of Lake Anahuac, on a small island. The sign given by Huitzilopochtli (the Aztec God of War) is reproduced in the emblem of the National Flag. The renovation of life to the indigenous people is depicted in the eagle, in left profile, standing up and perched on a nopal cactus. The eagle is resting on its left claw while holding a rattlesnake with its right claw and griping the other portion of the snake with its beak as if ready to tear it apart. The nopal cactus on which the eagle stands is emerging from an islet, which is a small island. The cactus contains red cactus fruit (tunas), which represents the human heart to the Aztecs. The national emblem also contains a symbol of a republic along with the pre-Hispanic codices (manuscripts such as symbols). The republic is symbolized in the lower part of the emblem containing two garlands joined by a three colored ribbon, on its left is oak and on its right is laurel. The use of the banners and ribbons can be dated back to ancient Mexican history. Evidence shows that the Az tecs, Tlaxcaltecans, Tepenecas and other tribes used banners with various symbols to identify themselves with their government or state. Prior to the establishment of the Mexican National Flag, the colonial period used emblems of the monarchs to represent the Spanish Territory. Spaniards were accustomed to using their own pendants and standards however; they used nothing to represent the colonial nation as a whole. Mexico began using banners during the period of independence when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started the independence movement in September 15, 1810. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla adopted the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe from his sanctuary and placed it on the armys flag. Shortly after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the supreme congress reunited in Michoacan in 1815 where three flags were created, one of war, one of parliament, and one of commerce. The flag of war had blue and white blocks surrounding the flag outline with red with an eagle on the center standing on a cactus. This flag was used a lot during many of the battles that helped sustain the liberty of the nation. Other leaders of the independence movement also used their own flags, which contained the colors green, white, and red. Later on Vicente Guerrero and Augustine de Iturbide joined forces to declare Mexico an independent constitutional monarchy, and on February 24, 1821, on which they published the Iguala Plan. The people who were currently living in Mexico (Spaniards, Creoles, Indians and Mestizos) were to be known as citizens of Mexico, (Mexicans). Iturbide then used the colors green, white, and red to depict the flag of the new nation. The colors were shown in three diagonal fractions, one of them red with a white star on it, another green with a red star on it and the other section white with a green star on it. In the center a gold imperial crown with the words Independence, Religion, and Union shown around it. The color white symbolized religion, the green independence, and the red union. This flag was later called the Bandera de Las Tres Garantias. In 1821 the colors of the flag were used in different order. During the Provisional Government the order of the three colored sections of the flag were to be used in vertical positions with the order of the colors to be

Degradation Except for the Congo Basin, the tropical rainforests of Africa have been largely depleted by commercial exploitation: logging and conversion for agriculture. In West Africa, nearly 90% of the original rainforest is gone. The remainder is heavily fragmented and in a degraded state, being poorly used. Especially problematic in Africa is desertification and conversion of rainforests to erodible agriculture and grazing lands. To counteract this trend, the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations have put a number of global initiatives in place. Details About the Rainforests Status By far, the largest number of countries with rainforests are located in one geographical section of the world- the Afrotropical region. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) indicates that these countries,à mainly in West and Central Africa, are mostly poor with populations that live at the subsistence level. Most of the tropical rainforestsà of Africa exist in the Congo (Zaire) River Basin, though remnants also are present throughout Western Africa in a sorry state due to the plight of poverty, which encourages subsistence agriculture and firewood harvesting. This realm is dry and seasonal when compared to the other areas, and the outlying portions of this rainforest are steadily becoming a desert. Over 90%à of West Africas original forest has been lost over the last century and only a small part of what remains qualifies as closed forest. Africa lost the highest percentage of rainforests during the 1980s of any other tropical region. During 1990ââ¬â95 the annual rate of total deforestation in Africa was nearly 1%. In the whole of Africa, for every 28 trees cut down, only one tree is replanted. Challenges and Solutions According to rainforest expert Rhett Butler, who wrote the book A Place Out of Time: Tropical Rainforests and the Perils They Face: The outlook forà the regions rainforestsà is not promising. Many countries have agreed in principle to conventions of biodiversity and forest preservation, but inà practice, these concepts of sustainable forestry are not enforced. Most governments lack the funds and technical know-how to make these projects a reality.Funding for most conservation projects comes from foreign sectors and 70-75% of forestry in the region is funded by external resources....Additionally, a population growth rate exceeding 3% annually, combined with the poverty of rural peoples, makes it difficult for the government to control local subsistence clearing and hunting. An economic downturn in important parts of the world has many African nations re-examining their forest product harvesting policies. African and international organizations alike have initiated local programs addressing the sustainable management of rainforests. These programs are showing some potential but have had minimal effect to date. The United Nations is putting some pressure on African governments to abandon tax incentives for practices that encourage deforestation. Ecotourism and bioprospectingà areà believed to have potential as they add much or more value to local economies when compared with wood products.

Answer question - Coursework Example Moreover, his preference towards ââ¬ËAir Jordanââ¬â¢ sneakers may be biased given that the brand is associated with his name. This may be true. The appeal to authority is legitimate. Joeââ¬â¢s views regarding the movie are his own speculative views regarding the movie after watching it. Moreover, the opinion given is honest and non-biased given that there exists a level of trust between the two friends. This argument is fallacious. Even though the scientists have an expert authority regarding other planets, there has been no evidence to prove that life does exist on other planets. In this regard, this claim is rather speculative since the scientists are still hoping to find proof of existence of life on other planets. This is not true. The appeal to authority is fallacious given that the individual expressing this opinion does not have an expert authority regarding all beautiful women in America. Moreover, there is no proof that all women from America participated in the contest. In this regard, there is a possibility that there are far more beautiful women than Vanna in America. This claim may not be true. This argument is fallacious given that the appeal to authority, the opponents, may not be trustworthy and valid. In this regard, the opponents may have inflated the figures regarding the number of protestors at the rally. For each of the following arguments, indicate whether it is an appeal to popular opinion, an appeal to tradition, or an appeal to emotion. (The argument might fit into more than one of these categories. If so, explain why.) Then determine whether it is fallacious, and why. The statement is an appeal to popular opinion. The argument is fallacious given that the appeal to authority is biased in its own favor. In this regard, the residents of United States are biased in favoritism of their own country. Research Article Critique Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Research Article Critique - Essay Example The purpose statement is concentric upon using the research that was performed as a means of drawing inference on the way in which elderly abuse is exhibited throughout the current model and seeking to ameliorate it utilizing the indicators that were provided. The article was able to note several key insights with respect to the data which was discussed and presented. The first of these had to do with the fact that elderly abuse was not solely contingent upon the overall amount of money that the facility or its care cost. Instead, the researchers pointed to the fact that a high rate of staff turnover effected a situation in which low levels of oversight were provided to the incoming staff. This was due in part to the fact that proper training was not provided or effected within the organizations in question; due to the understanding by leadership that these employees would not long remain with the entity and therefore the expense of extensive training and oversight was unwarranted. The evidence that is provided for this particular analysis is an overview of data that was tabulated from nearly 300 Israeli care giving facilities; specifically those tasked with providing elderly care to a high percentage of the total overall patients that they admitted. Furthermore, reports of abuse, government audits, and personal interviews with individuals whose relatives were suspected of being abused was also tabulated as means of approaching this issue from a variety of different standpoints and gaining as accurate a level of inference as possible. With respect to any assumptions or biases, there were no blatant ones that struck this particular author as worthy of mentioning. However, it should be noted that it is without question that regardless the level of academic integrity and rigor that these authors put into their work, bias in one format or another is virtually inevitable and could have

Child abuse Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Child abuse - Assignment Example Children abused by family members who should be protecting them often lose trust for adults. Additionally, cultural values may restrict members from talking about sexual activities, making it more difficult for the child. The abused child may blame themselves for the abuse and as such may take long to talk to anyone about it. As a result, the abuse may go on for weeks, even months, before anyone knows about the atrocity. Abuse affects the childââ¬â¢s emotional, psychological, social and physical aspects of life which includes increased risk for depression, poor or lack of self esteem and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Avoidance of grilling the child for every detail or asking many questions, as this may overwhelm them. Instead, they should gently ask open-ended questions; at the same time reassuring the child that their secret is safe. The child should be taken to a pediatric hospital for check up of possible damage to the sexual organs. Furthermore, an experienced mental health professional should be contacted to help the child cope with trauma Teaching the child basic sexual education is important. Alternatively, a health professional could be engaged where the child learns accurate names given to private parts and how to take care of them so as to minimize reliance on older children or adults for help. Sexual advances from anybody should be discouraged, as well as inappropriate touching. Encouraging them to can make decisions concerning their bodies, for instance saying ââ¬Å"noâ⬠when they do not want to be touched is important. Communication is an important part of developing trust with the child. Encouraging the child to ask questions when in doubt about sexual advances makes the child feel protected and is more likely to report any abuse. Child sex abuse occurs within family settings with a majority of the abused children being unable to report the atrocity, probably due to the trust they had on the perpetrator. Child sex abuse

Ryanair Business Ethics
Ryanair Business Ethics Summary of the unit: Business Ethics is a key component; in fact, it could be the very bases of the way in which operational activities are carried out within a business. Ethics are to do with what is right and wrong. It is about how a company does its business and how its activities affect all of its stakeholders. A business is part of society and therefore is required to maintain a certain standard of behaviour. TASK 1: Assessment 1 A Study of a Selected Company Using an organisation of your choice but in discussion with your tutor, research the ethical values and activities of the company. Explore ethical issues relevant to the companys progress, identify stakeholders and conflicts of interest and assess the ethical implications for stakeholders. Finally, explore the social implications of business ethics for the company. Introduction: Ethics refers to the moral rights and wrongs of any decision a business makes. It is a value judgement that may differ in importance and meaning between different individuals. Businesses may adopt ethical policies because they believe in them or they believe that by showing they are ethical; they improve their sales. Background of the organisation or company: Ryanair is Ltd which means the liability of members or subscribers of the company is limited to what they have invested into the company. Ryanair is an Irish low cost airline, which is located on the grounds of Dublin Airport, with its primary operational base at London Stansted Airport. The airline operates over 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and has been characterised by rapid expansion and its low-cost. The route network serves 30 countries both in Europe and North Africa. Explain the ethical values and activities of the company: (Areas of ethical activities include: ethics in finance, eg bribery, executive pay, insider trading, lobbying; ethics in human resource management, eg discrimination, worker surveillance; ethics in production, eg animal testing, genetically modified (GM) foodstuffs, planned obsolescence; ethics in sales and marketing, eg spamming, shills, product placement, green washing; ethics in intellectual property eg software piracy, counterfeiting, peer-to-peer file sharing) Ryanair have made it very hard to find their mission statement, but on the basis of their main objective one can see that Ryanair wants to be the low-cost airline. In my opinion, based on different information I have read during research I believe Ryanair will do just about anything to maintain that low-cost airline status. Ryanair are cutting the costs in which they spend by reducing fuel, re-styling their inflight magazine from A4 to A5 and doubling it up as a menu. The airline has also been accused of environmental effects which are imputing to the speed up of Global Warming due to the emissions which the planes are releasing. In a conference to discuss corporate strategies, Michael OLeary (CEO) says, Its the oldest, simplest formula; Pile em high and sell em cheapà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ We want to be the Wal-Mart of the airline business. Nobody will beat us on price EVER. Ryanair inform their stakeholders about what they believe, is ethical behaviour in the Chairmans report as part of the Annual Report. However, they do not mention how they will improve occurring problems. Notwithstanding the issues we face, the outstanding people at Ryanair continue to work hard on behalf of shareholders to reduce our costs while at the same time delivering the lowest fares in Europe to our 79 million passengers. Explain the ethical issues relevant to the companys progress. (These include corporate governance; corporate social responsibility; environment; sustainability; human rights; corruption; trading fairly; legal and regulatory compliance; business practices; working conditions; individual ethical responsibilities): Human Rights Business ethics considers actions taken on behalf of organisations such as Ryanair. Business ethics asks the business if its actions are good or bad for us humans. Many questions that arise in business ethics affect all of us such as the environmental ones. There are also some issues which relate to human rights too. Therefore, it is important that Ryanair deals with these issues and questions correctly as they do affect humans and the environment. Human rights are mainly about discrimination. For example, it is illegal in the UK to treat people differently because of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability. These are known as basic human rights. There are other types of human rights which are built into legal system. At Ryanair, employees are entitled to a contract of employment, to work part time, to be able to join a union and to have hearing against wrongful dismissal. This is for everyone; this is known as human rights. Ryanair would have to follow human rights when employing people to work with them; they cannot deny someone to work for them because of their race, gender, religion or disability. If these laws are broken in Ryanair they can be sued. Ryanairs commitment to operating with respect for human rights is reflected in company policies and procedures. In order to integrate human rights considerations into the management of their business, human rights due diligence is part of their risk assessment for new production and sales markets. For existing production and sales markets, Ryanair will regularly evaluate human rights related risks and conduct human rights impact assessments on high risk markets. Risk and impa ct assessments are used for them to identifying actual and potential human rights impacts from their business activities, which are then managed by the relevant business functions. Ryanair works broadly to promote respect for human rights through public policy, stakeholders dialogues and collaborations. Working Conditions When people start working for a business organisation, they are entitled to a set of minimum working conditions, which are not just about wages and salaries. They also cover aspects of work such as hours, holiday entitlement, privacy harassment and discrimination. It is up to employers to create working conditions that are fair, just and open. Trade Unions have the traditional role of defending worker rights against bad employers. Ryanairs employees must have been told about the working conditions which should cover all aspects such as things like hours, holidays, salaries and wages. It is up to the employer to create the working conditions, if something is unfair there are Trade Unions who have the role to defend workers from the bad employers. The employees shall be granted and correctly compensated for any types of paid leave to which they are legally entitled. For Example, leaves include annual leave, maternity/parental leave and sick leave. Ryanairs employee should be treated with respect and dignity. Under no circumstances Ryanair either accept the use by their suppliers, their subcontractors or other business partners of humiliating or corporal punishment, and no employee shall be subject to physical, sexual, Psychological or verbal harassment or abuse. Wages must be paid regularly, on time, and must reflect the experience, qualifications and performance of the employee. Ryanairs minimum requirement is that employers shall pay at least the statutory minimum wage, the prevailing industry wage or the wage negotiated in a collective agreement, whichever is higher. All other types of legally mandated benefits and compensations shall be paid. No unfair deductions are allowed, and the employee has the right to a written specification of how the wage has been calculated. Corporate Governance Ryanair have board of directors who make important decisions. They are answerable to board managers. Governance is important to large businesses like Ryanair. it is important because how will HM directors know what mangers are doing. Therefore the government gets involved. Also corporate governance is the people and procedures for taking a major decision within Ryanair. Ryanair will have to send directors progress about the business so they are always updated, the managers at Ryanair will be responsible for consulting the board directors about everything that goes on in the business on a regular basis. Governance is vital to big companies such as Ryanair because how will Ryanair directors acknowledge what managers are doing, this government will step in. Corporate governance is the employees and measures for taking important decisions within Ryanair. Trading Fairly Fair trade is where: Business is carried on in an open manner. Competition takes place on grounds that are equal for all parties Consumers can feel secure that the goods and services they are buying are going to be of satisfactory quality. Ryanair must make sure that they are always trading fairly and theyre consumers should always feel secure that goods and services they are using are going to be of satisfactory quality. Ryanair agree that wages in some production countries are too low. Ensuring that all textile workers should be able to live on their wages has always been Ryanair s vision, and this is also stated in our Code of Conduct. In November 2013, Ryanair had developed a new roadmap based on their vision, a fair living wage covering workers basic needs should be paid by all HM commercial goods suppliers. One important element of this is that Ryanair s while another states that this requirement is based on a skilled workforce whos wages are negotiated and reviewed annually, involving democratically elected trade unions of worker representatives. Identify stakeholders of the organisation and conflicts of interest and assess the ethical implications for stakeholders. (Stakeholders owners, employees, customers, suppliers, competitors, citizens, etc. Conflicts of interest between stakeholder groups e.g. shareholders versus environmentalists) Ryanairs Main Stakeholders include: Shareholders Business Partners Customers Employees Conflicts of interest Ryanair Stakeholders: Employees Vs Owners Employees want higher wages and owners want high profits therefore want to pay employees lower wages. Customers Vs Shareholders Low prices is what customers want, but higher prices is what shareholders want as it means higher profits. Employees Vs Management Conflict might occur when management desire to cut costs to boost profit in order to satisfy their own needs as well as different stakeholders as employees want higher wages. Stakeholders Stakeholders are a person, group or organisation that has interest or concern in an organisation. Stakeholders can affect or be affected by the organisations actions, objectives and policies. The below diagram includes definitions for each stakeholder: Ryanairs main stakeholders are: Employees who seek the necessary training along with career development opportunities within Ryanair. They also want job security. Shareholders who want a dividend from profits. Customers who want services that meet their needs when flying. They wish for flights that are at low prices and convenient dates and times. Explain the social implications of business ethics for the organisation or company. (Implications include adapting business behaviour; responding to ethical pressures; implementing ethical practices; influence of stakeholders and pressure groups; impact on competitiveness; reputation; public image; ethical trade; value-added; complying with relevant legislation and codes of practice, e.g. UK law, EU law;UN Declaration on Human Rights; UN Global Compact; economic activity e.g. location) (Other Implications include: global, eg environment; corporate, eg legal and regulatory compliance, policies and practices; individual (employee, consumer) Ethical Concerns and Solutions Ryanair is a business that is acting unethically in many ways. I have included the reasons which I think are the main ones. EnvironmentalThe emissions, which are coming from the aircraft, are believed to be having a very bad effect on the Earths atmosphere which is causing harm which leads to Global Warming, this will have an effect on everyone if Ryanair doesnt stop right now. This is evidence that the business is acting unethically as they are not caring for the environment in which we are all living in. Social An example of the way in which Ryanair is acting unethically in relation to employment practice which became known when former employee Sophie Growcoot got in contact with her local representative to reveal the details of her employment contract with the company Crewlink, which acts as a contractor for Ryanair. The Independent later published the story. Growcoot explains that Crewlink forced her to take three months of compulsory unpaid leave a year during the winter months, air traffic is slower therefore Ryanair require less staff. Not only is a compulsory unpaid leave bad enough, the contract forbids her from taking additional employment yet provided no compensation during that period of leave. She also criticized Ryanair for making her pay for her uniform and for required safety courses. Growcoot then explains further to all of that they only paid her for the hours she was in the air, which didnt include any turnaround time between flights, meetings, time on ground resulti ng from cancellations or delays and pre-flight briefings. However due to this claims Ryanair have not denied them but expressed that she was employed by Crewlink and not them therefore they hold no responsibility for any of this accusations. Health and Safety The action in which Ryanair is carrying out which leads me to believe that they are an unethical business is that they are putting their passengers and staff at risk by restricting the amount of fuel they carry in an attempt to cut costs. In a recent article published by The Independent, the airline has been accused of not putting extra fuel into their tasks, which would be used due to any delays. The article includes an example of this which has recently happened, a Ryanair flight has to make to attempts to land then make a pit stop as they had not filled the tank fully included extra fuel in which they needed. However, this is not a legal problem as they fill the tank to the amount by law. They have the amount issues by law, but are driving slower in order to use up less this means they are adding time on to journeys. With these issues and more creating black clouds over the business which is making them act unethically, Ryanair needs to consider ways in which they could deal with the occurring issues if of course they can actually deal with them. The fact is that Ryanair is faced with unethical issues including, environmental, social and safety ones. In order to start acting more ethically the airline seriously needs to overcome the occurring problems, for the three issues I have explained above I am going to suggest ways in which they can change unethical to ethical. Environmental: Problem The emissions from Ryanair aircrafts are having bad effects on our environment. Solution In order for the emissions released to not affect our environment Ryanair should look into exactly how much is being released and consider changing what they use that makes the emissions have such a bad effect. Ryanair needs to go green like Virgin America and Air France, which are the two airlines that were awarded the most eco-friendly. Practicality If other airlines that are highly recognised and extremely successful can go green and be environmentally friendly then why cant Ryanair. In order for this solution to be successful the airline need to invest more time and money into biofuel, recycling etc. as in the long run this is the better option for everyone. Social Problem Ryanairs contractor Crewlink has been drawing up harsh contracts for staff of Ryanair. Solution Crewlink are working for Ryanair, yet its Ryanair that get the blame for all the disasters like in Sophie Growcoots story. Ryanair cannot deny its happening as they know it is, but to stop it and act ethically towards their employees, they need to change the way in which the contracts are being drawn. If Crewlink are the ones who are responsible Ryanair should disconnect from them and treat their employees with fair advantages rather than unfair disadvantages. Possible vs. Practicality To change the way in which the contracts are drawn is hard as Crewlink are a company as well (even though they are working for Ryanair) they might go against Ryanairs wishes. To me the most practical thing to do in this situation is to drop Crewlink all together and start employing people straight through Ryanair that way if anything does happen Ryanair has all the documents to fight against claims because at the moment they have no evidence. However, this may increase costs, which would make shareholders unhappy. Safety: Problem In attempt to cut costs Ryanair is reducing the amount of fuel brought on a journey right down to the amount needed by law. This means no emergency extra. Solution The solution to this is obvious. Bring extra. Even though fuel is expensive wouldnt Ryanair rather pay for that then is the cause of passengers and staffs deaths if an unfortunate incident occurs? Possible vs. Practicality This is without a doubt something Ryanair should stop doing it is unsafe to all. If they continue they may end up spending more and getting into more trouble therefore losing customers and loosing profit. This is so important that shareholders would be willing to have lower dividends for a while. Impacts of Acting Ethically Even though acting ethically is a good thing, Ryanair have been unethical for a long time and with the change there is bound to be some impact on the business and its stakeholders. If the business was to carry out the solutions I have suggested they will encounter long-term and short-term advantages and disadvantages. In making the ethical decision to stop reducing fuel in order to cut costs would mean that the business would need to invest more money therefore in the short-term no one would be the winners as the shareholders might not get as much money back as they invested. However, in the long-term, as by carrying out this particular solution, customers may view Ryanair as safer and trust worthier, the business profits may increase therefore the Ryanair will be a good investment once more. If the business were to cut off Crewlink and have an in-house recruitment, Ryanair may save money, as they would no longer need to pay Crewlink for their services. This would be an advantage for the business for two reasons, they would be able to control everything and stay out of trouble caused by linked companies and they would cut costs in a safer way. For the last solution it is a win/win situation for all involved, the business and stakeholders. By being more environmentally friendly Ryanair will attract more customers as they will still be able to keep their low-cost scheduled flights just in an ego way. In my judgment I think Ryanair would be crazy not to carry out these changes, they will be beneficial to everyone in many ways. As a business Ryanair will be able to maintain its low-cost reputation but just do it will more certainty, yes in the short-term it may be a lose but it will be a win for all in the long-term. Assignment 2: Ethical Concerns in the Community of the Selected Company- P3, P4, P2.Research the ethical concerns of different communities in which a selected business operates and write a full report for submission. Define Ethics: Ethics are the set of moral principles that guide a persons behavior. These morals are shaped by social norms, cultural practices, and religious influences. Ethics reflect beliefs about what is right, what is wrong, what is just, what is unjust, what is good, and what is bad in terms of human behavior. They serve as a compass to direct how people should behave toward each other, understand and fulfil their obligations to society, and live their lives. Define Business Ethics: Business ethics are the study of proper business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial issues, such as corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility and fiduciary responsibilities. Business ethics are often guided by law, while other times provide a basic framework that businesses may choose to follow in order to gain public acceptance. Mention your selected business and give historical background Apple Inc. is an American multinational corporation that designs and manufactures consumer electronics and computer software products. The companys best-known hardware products include Macintosh computers, the iPod and the iPhone. Apple software includes the Mac OS X operating system, the iTunes media browser, the iLife suite of multimedia and creativity software, the iWork suite of productivity software, Final Cut Studio, a suite of professional audio and film-industry software products, and Logic Studio, a suite of audio tools. The company operates more than 250 retail stores in nine countries and an online store where hardware and software products are sold. Established in Cupertino, California on April 1, 1976 and incorporated January 3, 1977,the company was called Apple Computer, Inc. for its first 30 years, but dropped the word Computer on January 9, 2007 to reflect the companys ongoing expansion into the consumer electronics market in addition to its traditional focus on personal computers. Apple has about 35,000 employees worldwide and had worldwide annual sales of US$32.48 billion in its fiscal year ending September 29, 2008.For reasons as various as its philosophy of comprehensive aesthetic design to its distinctive advertising campaigns, Apple has established a unique reputation in the consumer electronics industry. This includes a customer base that is devoted to the company and its brand, particularly in the United States. Fortune magazine named Apple the most admired company in the United States in 2008 and in the world in 2009. Here I will be using my selected business Apple, to describe the ethical concerns facing specific communities as a result of their activities. Explain the ethical concerns of different communities in which a selected business operates: (DifferentCommunities include: local; regional; national; global; pressure groups, eg Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth; impact of overseeing bodies, eg UK Government, United Nations, European Union, World Trade Organization (WTO), World Health Organization (WHO) (Ethical Concerns include: corporate social responsibility; globalisation; cultural imperialism; ecology; environment; fair trade;corruption; child labour; outsourcing; personal attitudes; whistle blowing) Apple, whose main manufacture in China is Foxconn, had to face ethical concerns in China recently. Local Community The ethical concerns facing the local community are Environmental and Child Labor. The environment is impacting the local community because the business is having an increase in the level of pollution in the city which is of course having a negative effect on the environment. Child Labor is another ethical concern that Foxconn have to face as they are employing under age children which is affecting the local community as they are not getting the opportunity to be educated instead they are having to work in factories. Regional and National Community The ethical concern facing the Regional and National Community beyond China is mostly to do with the Environment. The factories in China in which Foxconn own to manufacture the supplies for Apple create and let off a lot of pollution which is spreading across the seas into H.K and Taiwan. This is then impacting the environment second hand in another community. A business can also be affected by acting unethically in one community but having it pass on to the next through media. Once a community sees what the business is doing in another community they may be less willing to engage with that particular business, this creates a bad reputation for the business. Pressure GroupsEnvironmental pressure groups consistently force issues into the publics attention and therefore pressure both governments and business leaders into action. In terms of Child Labor, U.N.I.C.E.F is a pressure group that stands up for childrens rights. Along with promoting the importance of education for children living in communities where work seems like the only option U.N.I.C.E.F will fund the education. The roles that pressure groups such as U.N.I.C.E.F play in encouraging these businesses to act ethically is extremely vital and so important as without them the businesses would just do whatever is easiest. Overseeing BodiesOverseeing bodies such as the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Governments are needed to deal with these ethical questions that concern us about our businesses. National, Continental and International bodies are taking all sorts of action to monitor the activities of business around the world. Examples of these overseeing bodies are: UK Government United Nations (UN) European Union (EU) World Trade Organisation (WTO) World Health Organisation (WHO) Concerns of Communities Here I will be taking the issues mentioned above and explaining how businesses could improve their corporate social responsibility. In terms of the Environment and Child Labor concerning the community due to unethical behaviour from Foxconn and Apple there are ways they could eliminate these. EnvironmentThe environment is not just having an effect in one community but is traveling on and having a second hand effect on neighbouring communities much like the second hand smoking effect only this is second hand pollution. Due to the business acting unethically and producing masses amounts of pollution from Foxconn factories manufacturing Apple products the environment is having a beating. This is effecting the rise of global warming aiding it to go faster. The mining of the raw materials is also impacting our environment badly as they are not going about it the correct way. Ways in which Apple can eliminate these unethical environmental concerns is by hiring another company to manufacture their products, although this may mean they need to spend more as one company may be more expensive than another. However, by doing so Apple will no longer be seen as acting unethically as they will not be associated with an unethically partnering company. Foxconn however can eliminate these unethical environmental concerns but it will take more than one step. They need to consider ways in which they can produce what they are producing but ethically. For example, they can start by sourcing the raw material in an ethical way such as mining in areas that are specifically designed to be mined in and recycling the waste materials they do not use. Child LabourChild Labouring is a horribly unethical thing to be associated with and both Foxconn and Apple should be very ashamed of themselves. Due to the hiring of underage children to work in factories manufacturing Apple products both Foxconn and Apple are guilty of this unethical act that is a concern the business needs to face. Apple once again can eliminate this problem quite easily, they can drop Foxconn and find another company to manufacture their products, hopefully a company that doesnt use Child Labour. Again this might cost them more but they should consider whether it is worth saving their money of a childs rights. For Foxconn is little tougher to eliminate this problem as it a reputation they will always carry, however Child Labouring only occurs in certain communities where education is limited for children so working is really their only option. Foxconn can spend more money and open a factory to manufacture the products in another community or country (if needed) so that they cant be exposed to the Child Labouring temptations. The Environment and Child Labor concerning the community due to unethical behaviour from Foxconn and Apple can be prevented by considering and acting upon the suggestions I have made above but there are many more unethical concerns facing these businesses and those also need to be sorted before the business is somewhat considered ethical. Social Impacts Here I will be describing the social implications of business ethics facing Apple in its different areas of activity: Apple has been acting unethically and we can see from this report in the Guardian, Apple has been known to use child labour. The business ethics issues that I believe effect society as a whole are ethics in Finance, Human Resource Management and Sales and Marketing. Ethics in finance relates to issues like bribery, executive pay, insider trading and lobbying and it is a concern to society because it involves all sorts of illegal corruption. Ethics in human resource management includes discrimination, worker surveillance and is a concern to society because it is about the rights of society and employees of the business. Ethics in sales and marketing for example, spamming, shills, product placement, green washing are concerns to society because it is just a way of generating sales and can end up having a baggage pile on society. The implications of these issues for the business are different for each issue. For ethics in finance the business can face legal and regulatory concerns if they are caught demonstrating insider trading. The business is currently keeping a close eye on the stock exchange activity within the business to make sure no one is taking advantage of it. For ethics in sales and marketing faces a potential bad reaction from customers if they keep green washing their products in marketing. Currently the business is doing nothing to address this. As for the child labor Apple face legal concerns as it is against the law. According to the report Apple let the children go and pay for their education in a school of their familys choice. Judging the Impacts For this I will be focusing on the issue of Apples Child Labour use. Apple might deal with the issue of Child Labour by eliminating the problem and sticking to their code

Have a Seat :: social issues
Have a Seat Over the years there have been debates and arguments about Capital Punishment. There are all kinds of people that are for it and then there are all kinds of people against it. People that are against it say that it is injustice and cruel. Well those people may be right, but I feel that we should have Capital Punishment in the USA. In todayââ¬â¢s courts innocent people do go to jail for crimes they didnââ¬â¢t commit. When they do go to jail, human do like they normally do and make mistakes by putting some guy on death row and then weeks or even years later are executed. Then there is nothing that you can do to take back what you did. If we didnââ¬â¢t have Capital Punishment we would not worry about someone getting killed cause of someone else. Since the constitution says ââ¬Å"that no person shall suffer cruel and unusual punishmentâ⬠, we would not have to worry about breaking the constitution. It is cheaper for someone to stay in prison for life and not have parole than to kill the person. It takes more of tax payerââ¬â¢s money to go ahead and have someone killed. We should just keep paying for the criminals to stay in prison instead of killing him. If a murderer goes and kills someone then we kill the murderer, then we are at that personââ¬â¢s level. We can be the bigger person and just l et them sit in jail. If we just get rid of Capital Punishment then we would never have to worry about killing an innocent person for something they didnââ¬â¢t do. These are reasons we should get rid of Capital Punishment, because it doesnââ¬â¢t do any good for us. However, if we just sit there and do nothing about the over crowding population then we will have to let some of the criminals go. If we let criminals go they will go back and do the same thing because they know that the jails wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to hold them and they would get released again. Then their crimes will get worst, like instead of stealing a car they take a hostage. Instead of robbing banks they will go out and shoot someone. Criminals are always criminals and you canââ¬â¢t change them. There are a lot of people kidnapping little girls and killing them and what do we do, slap those on the wrist, since we canââ¬â¢t hold them in are jails.

Ken from Whose Life Is It Anyway Persuading the Judge to Let Him Die Essay
In this essay, I will be describing and analysing how Ken, from ââ¬Å"whose life is it anywayâ⬠, used persuasive techniques to persuade the judge to let him die. Ken is trying to persuade the judge to let him die, and he persuades him with this quote ââ¬Å"â⬠¦and I find the hospitalââ¬â¢s persistent effort to maintain this shadow of life an indignity and its humane. â⬠this quote is clearly showing that he does not want to rely on other people. The word ââ¬Å"maintainâ⬠stands for holding something like an object in your household. He does not want the hospital and the doctors to ââ¬Å"maintainâ⬠his shadow of life because he thinks that he is ââ¬Å"dead alreadyâ⬠. In the quote ââ¬Å"â⬠¦but the dignity starts with their choice. If I chose to live, it would be appalling if society killed me. If I chose to die, its equally appalling if society keeps me alive. â⬠This quote shows that he cares about other people not just himself. The word ââ¬Å"societyâ⬠is used because it shows that he thinks truly not only about himself. Also there is a word ââ¬Å"chooseâ⬠, this clearly shows that there is no modal verbs and it is more effective and emotive, as that word, it self, shows that he thought everything though what he actual said. I like the way Ken uses strong words like ââ¬Å"appallingâ⬠, by saying this, he is exaggerating and by doing this, he is shocking. Ken doesnââ¬â¢t thing letting someone live although theyââ¬â¢re against it is terrible, but the fact that they donââ¬â¢t get the choice. ââ¬Å"The cruelty doesnââ¬â¢t reside on saving someone or allowing them to die. It resides in the fact that the choice is removed from the man concernedâ⬠this quote means exactly how ken feels at that moment. The choice is about to be taken from him, and that will make things even harder for him. The word ââ¬Å"crueltyâ⬠is a very strong word. Using it, Ken, creates sympathy and it made the whole quote more persuasive and he was saying that people are cruel by taking the choice from him. Also I this quote, he is stating by using words like ââ¬Å"isâ⬠, ââ¬Å"factâ⬠, ââ¬Å"it residesâ⬠. All of these are modal verbs and show that he knows what he is talking about and is confident with what he thinks and knows. The author chose the techniques for a reason, and the reasons are that the whole fact about persuading the judge needs to be pointed out as itââ¬â¢s the most important bit in the story play, the judge will judge from whether to save the man or let him die as he wanted. Itââ¬â¢s a life or death situation. Ken also uses rhetorical questions to make the judge think, ââ¬Å"Is that surprising? â⬠Ken said this on purpose as it is very effective persuasive technique like in the one. Rhetorical questions overall, start arguments and debates in which this story is all about. Overall I think that the judge did the right thing letting ken die. He would be suffering mentally and physically if he didnââ¬â¢t. This story has many different writing techniques and only very few I have analysed in this essay. I think they are very effective upon this story and the story wouldnââ¬â¢t make sense and so much drama if it didnââ¬â¢t.

Communication Essays - Biology Of Gender, Gender Studies
Communication Essays - Biology Of Gender, Gender Studies Communication communication is the means by which ideas and information are spread from person to person. People use communication to express feelings, emotions, opinions and values, to learn and teach, and to improve their status. Communication is therefore vital to human interaction whether between parents and children, bosses and employees or even husband and wife. The diversity and characteristics of those involved in any interaction can thus affect communication. Taking account of any diversity in interaction rather than assuming uniformity is important to achieving effective communication. Good communication is difficult to master and can be a major source of strife in any situation or business. Gaps in communication arise when the intended message is not transmitted or the message is misunderstood. The resultant miscommunication is mainly due to the different styles of communication amongst people. In order to understand the differences of communications patterns we should begin by considering the different elements of the communication process between the sender of the information and receiver. In any form of communication, the sender has a message to transmit that becomes encoded. The receiver obtains this encoded message via some medium or channel e.g. verbal, nonverbal or written, which is then decoded and translated (as shown in the following diagram). In order for the communication process to work both the sender and the receiver must understand the codes. As an example consider the encrypted messages that were sent during World War II. In order for the receiver to understand the message, knowledge of the code was important. We can even consider the situation of an English speaker in Japan. For effective communication either one or both parties should be able to understand and communicate in the language of the other. Good and effective communication can therefore be affected by many things including the situation, time, culture, and gender. The assertion that gender affects communication in different ways has been accepted by a large part of the population today. Gender differences in communication may pose problems in interpersonal interactions leading to intolerance, resentment, stress and decreased productivity. This is extremely critical in business organizations but even moreso in your everyday world and therefore an examination of these differences in the first step to understanding the issues involved and moving towards better communication. In any study of communication, there is variability in what is meant by "communication". Some individuals may consider only the verbal attributes whereas yet others will consider nonverbal interactions and the smart will focus on both. Additionally research studies have focused either on both the microscopic and the macroscopic levels of communication. The microscopic level deals with performance or perception of verbal and nonverbal behavior and the macroscopic assesses behavior on a global level (Canary & Dindia, 1992). In this discussion, both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication will be considered. Gender communication Many people use the words gender and sex interchangeably, however these words do not mean the same thing. The word sex refers to the genetic and biological status of being male or female, while gender refers to the psychological and social manifestations of being male or female, i.e. the socially defined, learned, constructed accoutrements of sex, such as hairstyle, dress, nonverbal mannerisms, and interests (Lippa, 2002). Gender therefore focuses on the social construct regarding the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex. It concentrates on the roles and responsibilities, expectations, and aptitude of men and women that are learned, and modified as a result of the interaction of culture, society and environment. There are two views regarding gender the essentialist and the social constructionist views (Robb, 2004). The essentialist view gender as that with which we were born, being part of our genetic make-up. The male and female roles are therefore distinct identities and they shape behavior. However, this view might be somewhat limited since it does not account for the masculine and feminine attributes inherent in people. The social constructionist upholds the idea that psychological conditioning early in life leads to who we are and become as a result of the social interactions. Therefore in this view gender is shaped by society, culture and time. What then is gender communication? Several have used the term to signify the differences in communication

Is there a relationship between age and gender with PTSD symptoms Research Paper
Is there a relationship between age and gender with PTSD symptoms - Research Paper Example Approximately more than two thirds of people within the general population may experience an axiological event of trauma within their lives with up to a fifth of persons living in the United States experiencing such an event in any year (Sandro, Arijit, & David, 2005). These events range from rape, motor vehicle accident, physical assault, and natural disasters. Events such as motor vehicle accidents, floods, terrorist attacks are traumatic events which many persons experience within their life and have the potential of precipitating into a wide array of physical and mental health disorders. For instance in a survey carried out united States residents, thirteen percent reported a lifetime exposure to human generated or natural disasters (Davidson, Hughes, & Blazer, 1991). PTSD is one of the most commonly studied and to a great extent, the most pleonastic and debilitating psychological disorder culminating from traumatic events. This has increased interest and attracted attention of p sychiatrists, psychologists, and interested researchers alike and is rapidly taking center stage when it comes to psychological disorders in the medical world. It is the sole intention of this paper to demonstrate how age and gender of persons relates to the occurrence of PTSD symptoms. It will focus on the difference in severity of PTSD symptoms in terms of gender and age. The study will target adult male and female persons ranging from thirty to sixty years and children ranging from six to twelve years. Another group will be included ranging from fifteen to twenty nine years composed of both male and female persons. Literature Review This study has been limited to research studies that were conducted between 1990 and 2008. Within this period there has been research events conducted as relates to PTSD but a profound absence of work that underscores the relationship between the severity of PTSD and the age and gender of persons. Therefore the bulk of the research seeks to investigat e this particular issue and give critical information contributing to the known facts as relates to PTSD. I have singled out pre-existing literature that contains critical information that is of great importance to this research event. One such article is the epidemiology of post-traumatic stress disorder after disasters (Sandro, Arijit, & Vlahov, 2005). It gives reliable epidemiological information that relates to PTSD symptoms and sets stage for a more conclusive and a much wider research effort to develop statistics of PTSD severity symptoms with relation to not only disaster but many other etiologies of PTSD. Although specific traumas have their effects well documented and established, many persons both in research and clinical settings have experienced more than a single traumatic event in their lives (Breslau, Chilcoat, Kessler, & Lucia, 1999). Of these persons, some report symptoms of PTSD that indicate the combined effects of two or more of these traumatic experiences as opp osed to mainly their latest trauma or the severest from of trauma they have been exposed to. There is an increasing amount of literature suggesting that the severity of a persons PTSD symptoms can be predicted by the lifetime number of traumas that an individual has experienced (Norris, 1992). These studies and cumulative trauma literature fail to give significant information

Patients Dealing with Poverty Essay Example for Free
Patients Dealing with Poverty Essay Poverty affects almost half the world. Over three billion people live on less than $2.50 a day (Global Issues). The United States, one of the wealthiest nations in the world, accounts for almost 12% of these statistics. In addition to these people, another 50 million are ââ¬Å"near povertyâ⬠level. Even more alarming, according to the 1999 Census Bureau, over 16% of all children in the United States live in poverty verse the recorded 12% of adults (Yahoo Health). I chose to write about people living with poverty because God has really placed the issue on my heart this year. Last May, my father lost his job and became homeless. I am happy to say he is now employed and looking for housing. After seeing the effects of poverty first hand, I have felt tremendously compelled to reach out to those in need. I have applied for an Episcopal Urban Intern Program through AmeriCorps and if I am accepted, I will be working with them starting in August. God has really blessed me with a heart of compassion and understanding, and I want to use that gift to serve others to the best of my ability. Poverty is a global issue that affects every corner of our world. There are an endless amount of people suffering in every county and many issues to be discussed. Because there are so many people affected worldwide, I am only going to focus on the effects in the United States for this essay. So, what is poverty? Poverty can be defined in several different ways. According to the US Census Bureau, poverty is measured in numbers. Any person living on a yearly income of $11,136 or under (add $2,820 for each additional person in the household) is considered to be in poverty (US Census 2010). However, the social definition of poverty is any person living with a lack of essential items such as food, clothing, water, and shelter (Think Quest). Minority racial and ethnic groups are much more likely to live in poverty. Also, poverty is much more prevalent in single, female-headed households (Yahoo Health). It is extremely important to be educated about the kinds of people living in poverty, especially if you are a healthcare worker, because the effects of their financial status greatly impact their well-being. Individuals living at or near poverty level suffer a variety of chronic ailments. They often have no health insurance so they rely on emergency rooms for care and often do not fill their prescriptions. They frequently postpone getting medical care due to lack of insurance and also have shorter life spans (Society of Teachers of Family Medicine). For every small decrease in income we see a significant decrease in health outcome. Another big concern of poverty-level individuals is that they are more likely to smoke and to live sedentary lifestyles (Hope Through Healing Hands). In a study done in year 2000, researchers found that more than one third of people living in poverty had a drug or alco hol problem. Also, more than half (56%) of those studied reported not having enough to eat at sometime in the last year (Society of Teachers of Family Medicine). Lack of nutrition, for any period of time, can cause detrimental effects on the body such as weight loss, bone deterioration, and even death (Merck Manuals). Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety were also very prevalent in this study of poverty-stricken people. Something very interesting to me about this study is that in response to interview questions about issues in daily life, personal health and/or access to health care services were the third most commonly cited concerns (employment and housing were the top two concerns). Among these health concerns, costs and health insurance coverage were the biggest issues raised. Nearly half of Americans whose incomes are below 150% of the poverty level are without insurance coverage. In contrast, only about 40% of those with incomes below 100% of the poverty level are without health insurance (Society of Teachers of Family Medicine). This is due to the target income range of government programs. Federal and state programs (such as Medicaid) help tremendously with insuring those at poverty level. However, there are many others considered the ââ¬Å"working poorâ⬠who do not qualify for these programs. These people all too often have to choose between paying for meals and paying for health care. Those living in poverty that do have health insurance from government programs often have very limited coverage. Prescription medications and medical supplies (such as eyeglasses) are often not included. Healthcare professionals often mistake those in poverty, especially those between the 150% 200% level range, as non-compliant patients (Society of Teachers of Family Medicine). Because people living in poverty often do not come in for preventative care, do not fill prescriptions, and fail to adhere to other recommendations, they can easily be mistaken for ââ¬Å"bad patients.â⬠It is a common misconception that they are ignorant to the importance of health care. It is imperative to understand that these individuals are doing the best they can with the finances and resources they have available. The main solution to health care problems those living in poverty face is a change to our health care system. Coverage needs to be available to all members of society for all health needs. As healthcare workers, we are not all called to be change agents in the world for this cause. However, we can educate ourselves to better understand poverty so we can deal effectively with those patients experiencing it. Americans almost always seem to be informed of poverty in under-developed countries. They also seem to be well-aware that poverty causes poor health. Still, many in the U.S. remain unaware that this problem exists in our country as well (Hope Through Healing Hands). Healthcare providers can communicate effectively with poverty-stricken individuals by showing a genuine desire to assist and serve them. Developing a sense of empathy, not sympathy, for the person shows that you care for them rather than feel bad for them. It is important to understand that these individualsââ¬â¢ sense of time occurs only in the present. They rarely think of the future or what effects their present actions might have on them later in life (TFC Association). They live for today because that is all they have. It is best to project kindness to these individuals, as with any group of people. Another very effective tool for helping those living in poverty is providing resources. Researching free or low-cost programs in your community and sharing them with these patients is a great way to help. Using appropriate humor is also a great way to lighten the mood and bring a smile to someoneââ¬â¢s face that may be experiencing financial hardships (TFC Association). There are so many problems poverty brings upon an individual. Living with this burden can truly effect a person is so many ways. As a healthcare worker there is only so much we can do to assist people at these low-income levels. Although we can not provide a means for them financially or fix the living situation they are in, it is important to understand the impact we can have just by being compassionate. If you work in an office with ignorance to this issue, it is vital to inform those around you about the effects of poverty on health care. Before jumping to conclusions about a patient who is non-compliant, you may want to ask questions to find out if it is due to poverty. The key is to treat them with dignity and respect, regardless of their social status, and you really will make a difference. Works Cited 1. Poverty Facts and Stats ââ¬â Global Issues.
